At our studio, we understand that a perm is more than just a hairstyle—it's a commitment to maintaining the health and integrity of your hair. That’s why we require a personal consultation before any perm service. Here’s what you can expect during this crucial step:
- Hair Assessment: We start by examining the elasticity, porosity, and pH balance of your hair, both in its dry and wet states. **We can only do this in person.** This helps us determine if your hair can safely handle the perm solution or if it needs any preliminary treatment to ensure optimal results.
- Informed consent: We'd love for you to know what the after care of your perm will look like. It usually involves completely changing up your hair care routine including shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. If you're struggling to take care of your hair as it is, a perm will not make this easier for you. We would love to educate you on caring for your natural hair first. Often we find curls hiding underneath product build-up, lack of hair, or heat damage, mechanical damage, chemical damage, or pH imbalances. Thus saving you a whole lot of time and money! It's why we usually recommend starting with a haircut first.
- Customized Planning: Perms are highly customizable, and the time and cost can vary significantly—from 4 to 9 hours and we do charge respectively. By having a detailed conversation about what it is that you're looking to achieve with a perm, we're able to provide you with a detailed estimate so you can plan accordingly, ensuring no surprises in terms of budget or schedule.
- Patch Testing: To safeguard your hair from adverse reactions, we may perform a test swatch. This step is essential to check how our perm solution interacts with any previous chemicals or colors applied to your hair. This can be especially true of former home care situations, as sometimes the culprit of chemical reactions can be what was used as shampoo and conditioner, even if you've never colored your hair before.
